Isaiah 9:10 and the Tower of Babel
A Special Report for Raiders News Update
By Peter Goodgame
"Behold the land of the Chaldeans; this people was not, till Asshur founded it for them that dwell in the wilderness: they set up the towers thereof, they raised up the palaces thereof; and he brought it to ruin." Isaiah 23:13, KJV
Over four years ago I abruptly ended a series of articles that I was writing for Tom Horn and Raiders News Update. I needed time to strengthen my relationship with Jesus Christ and to set aside all of my research and my intense focus upon the Antichrist. If you truly know Jesus, then nothing else matters, and at that time I knew more about the Antichrist than I did about the One I called my Savior. This is a serious issue for many people who have a calling to expose the devil's schemes. Don't let your calling ever get out of balance with your relationship with the One who has called you! God is revealing many details about the end-times, but simply knowing these details is not enough. Always remember that the purpose of these revelations is to wake up the Bride of Christ and to call her back to her first love, so that we can shine like the stars in the midst of a wicked and perverse generation!
For three years I set aside my writing and research until my pastors invited me to teach for our mid-week Bible study. This series lasted for ten weeks and presenting it helped me to organize all of the material that I had collected over the years. Then in the Fall of 2011 the Lord gave me a clear message that it was time to write the book. The rough draft was written in December, edited over the following months, and will be released very soon, near the end of August, 2012, through Tom Horn's publishing house. Thank you, Tom Horn, for your support and encouragement.
Right after I submitted my rough draft I came upon the new book by Jonathan Cahn, The Harbinger, which almost everyone has heard of by now. After reading the book I recommended it in my newsletter of January 6th, 2012. Since that time Joe Farah of World Net Daily has turned the book into a documentary film called The Isaiah 9:10 Judgment. The revelation that is being shared by Cahn has to do with the parallels between the events leading up to the destruction of Israel during the time of Isaiah and the events that have taken place in the USA since September 11, 2001. Cahn is releasing a warning that the nine harbingers of destruction that accompanied Israel's fall can also be clearly seen overshadowing the USA. The centerpiece of this judgment is the rebuke that God gives to Israel in Isaiah 9:10:
The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel. And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutness of heart, The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycamores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars. Therefore the LORD shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and join his enemies together; The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. (Isa 9:8-12)
In Revelation 2:23 Jesus speaks to the Church and says, "I am He who searches hearts and minds..." Human beings have a natural tendency to fall into deception, to eagerly embrace propaganda, and to put forth a false front, yet Jesus says that He sees through it all and is able to understand the true motivations behind every word and deed. In this way the heart of Israel is revealed in Isaiah 9:10, the heart of the Laodicean Church is revealed in Revelation 3:17, and the hearts of the King and Queen of Babylon are revealed in Isaiah 14:13-14 and Revelation 18:7.
Israel: "And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutness of heart, The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycamores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars. Therefore the LORD shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and join his enemies together."
Laodicean Church: "So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked..."
King of Babylon: "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit."
Queen of Babylon: "How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her."
In his research Jonathan Cahn reveals that the statement made by Israel in Isaiah 9:10 was a message of pride and arrogance that was actually a message of defiance against God. For that specific reason God declared that His hand was raised in judgment against Israel and the Northern Kingdom would be destroyed by the Assyrians. Following the declaration of Isaiah 9:10 the Lord declared a series of judgments that each ended with the following phrase that is repeated FOUR TIMES:
"For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still." (Isaiah 9:12, 9:17, 9:21 and 10:4)
Asshur, the King of Babylon
The fourth judgment against Israel is the divine authorization that is given to Asshur to utterly destroy the Northern Kingdom of Israel, which took place in 722 BC. God literally says to Israel, "My hand is stretched out in wrath against you, and I will take my rod of wrath and give it to Asshur, and he will beat you down with it, until you repent!" But notice that the judgments of Isaiah 9 and 10 are not completed until we reach the well-known passage of Isaiah 14. This is the key revelation of my new book that identifies Asshur, the King of Babylon, as the end-times Antichrist. Everything that began with the Isaiah 9:10 judgment remains unfinished until Isaiah 14:27.
"For I will rise up against them, saith the LORD of hosts, and cut off from Babylon the name, and remnant, and son, and nephew, saith the LORD. I will also make it a possession for the bittern, and pools of water: and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith the LORD of hosts. The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand: That I will break Asshur in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders. This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations. For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?" (Isaiah 14:22-27)
Lucifer is referred to in Isaiah 14:12, but we must be very clear here: Lucifer is not Satan. Lucifer is merely another name for Asshur, the man who built Babylon after the Flood, who founded the land of the Chaldeans as well as the nation of Assyria, who became worshiped as the Assyrians' primary god. The kings of Assyria believed they were the earthly representations of Asshur upon the earth, and that is why the Lord refers to Asshur using singular verbs as if speaking to a singular individual. That is why he is portrayed as being on the scene in 722 BC, as well as on the scene at the very end of the age during the Day of the Lord. Asshur is named as the king of Assyria in Isaiah 10, but also named as the king of Babylon in Isaiah 14. In Genesis 10:8-11 he is named as both Nimrod and Asshur, and credited with founding Babylon (Babel) as well as the northern cities that later became the heart of the kingdom of Assyria. Asshur is a supernatural figure, and in my book I provide the evidence that his resurrection and physical return to this earth will be The Second Coming of the Antichrist.
To Rebuild the Tower
Jonathan Cahn's research makes it clear that God is speaking to our nation today and warning us of the coming judgment. According to Cahn, the response that the Lord is seeking is found in 2 Chronicles 7:14,
"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."
This is always a response that the Lord will answer, because His nature is that of love, mercy, and grace. Yet the Bible is clear that the judgment of God will eventually come down upon those who have rejected Christ and embraced the world instead. The Church is the Bride of Christ, and in contrast to the Church we have the world-system portrayed as the the Great Harlot in Revelation 17-18. The Bride of Christ will reign over the New Jerusalem whereas the Great Harlot reigns over Babylon the Great. The Church is the Bride of Christ, whereas the Great Harlot is the Bride of the Antichrist. Together they are the King and Queen of Babylon. Jesus loves His Bride, whereas the Antichrist in fact hates his bride, and his forces will one day attack and subdue her. Today the Queen reigns supreme, but soon there will be a palace coup in Babylon and the Queen will be deposed in favor of the King of Babylon:
"And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. For God hath put in their hearts to fulfill his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled." (Rev 17:16-17)
The imagery of Babylon as the great enemy of God and persecutor of God's people runs from Genesis to Revelation. It begins with the building of the Tower of Babel, and continues with the Babylonian captivity of Judah before coming to fruition at the end of Revelation. Jonathan Cahn's research focuses on the modern translation of the Masoretic Hebrew text of Isaiah 9:10, and he shows us that God has been speaking to our nation through the related signs and events since 9-11. However, when I first read Cahn's book I had just written four chapters for my own book focusing on Isaiah 9-14 in which I referred often to the Septuagint (LXX) translation of these texts, which were written several hundred years before the Masoretic translations were compiled. Here is my commentary on the meaning of Isaiah 9:10 from the Septuagint translation of the Old Testament as found at the end of chapter fourteen in my upcoming book:
The Lord has sent death upon Jacob, and it has come upon Israel. And all the people of Ephraim, and they that dwelt in Samaria shall know, who say in their pride and lofty heart, The bricks are fallen down, but come, let us hew stones, and cut down sycamores and cedars, and let us build for ourselves a tower. (Isaiah 9:8–10, LXX)
What the Lord is saying to Israel at this time cannot be missed or misunderstood. Compare the LXX translation of the passage above with the New King James version of Genesis 11:3–4:
Then they said to one another, Come, let us make bricks and…let us build for ourselves…a tower…
With this introduction to God’s judgment against Israel He is saying that the apostasy of Israel is so deep and so complete that it is as if the people of Israel were saying in their proud and rebellious hearts, "The bricks of the Tower of Babel have fallen down, but come, let us hew stones and cut timbers so that we can build it once again!"
The Tower of Babel was the original and ultimate symbol of mankind’s hubris and rebellion against God, and here God is comparing Israel’s apostasy to the original post-Flood apostasy at Babel that had resulted in the creation of the entire pagan system. God’s anger was kindled like never before, and judgment was sure to follow.
In his research Jonathan Cahn shows how the Masoretic translation of Isaiah 9:10 has been fulfilled at Ground Zero in New York City point by point: the rubble of bricks, the replacement with hewn stone, the cutting down of the sycamore, and its replacement with a cedar. When you delve into his research you will become convinced that none of this is contrived and it can only be the hand of God communicating through signs and events using Isaiah 9:10 as the template. I believe in the message that Jonathan Cahn has been sharing, but I also believe that it goes deeper and is much more personal and specific for our nation. The Septuagint translation gets to the heart of the matter, declaring that Israel's sin was total and complete apostasy along the lines of the rebellion that took place at Babel. What if this is the underlying sin of our nation, too? What if our leaders are saying in their hearts, "We don't need God, we're out to make a name for ourselves, we're in the business of empire-building, so come, let us build for ourselves a tower!"
Just as Cahn found symbols and events supporting the Masoretic reading of Isaiah 9:10, there were also several signs in the aftermath of 9-11 that support the Septuagint reading of Isaiah 9:10. I remember when the first plans for rebuilding the World Trade Center complex were introduced to the public. What struck me immediately were two things: First of all, the original plan called for a single massive tower of exactly seventy stories. In my research I have found that seventy is the number of fallen angels who were given authority over the seventy pagan nations of the world after the Tower of Babel event. If there is one number that specifically signifies Babylon, this is it. Secondly, I was struck by the fact that the tower would include, high up in the air, a hanging gardens, reminiscent of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which were one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. After learning of the proposed tower to be built at Ground Zero I distinctly remember thinking in my heart, "My God, it looks like they want to rebuild the Tower of Babel!"
The architect who was chosen to design the rebuilding of the World Trade Center was Daniel Libeskind, and his initial proposal was presented on December 18, 2002, in New York City. The book Up From Zero by Paul Goldberger summarizes his proposal,
Libeskind wanted to place cultural facilities, such as a museum of September 11, in glass buildings around the footprints that he designed in his characteristic angular manner, like crystalline forms. For the rest of the sixteen-acre site he suggested a mix of office buildings, public plazas, and retail stores, as well as a train station that would unify the various subway and transit lines in the area. And at the northwest corner of the site he proposed what he called, at first, the Gardens of the World, a 1,776-foot spire that would contain hanging gardens and would be tied to a seventy-story office building that would help provide structural support. (Goldberger, p. 9)
A New York Times commentary on Libeskind's proposal for this seventy-story "Freedom Tower" included the following remarks,
Freedom Tower stands at the pinnacle of the ''spiral of skyscrapers,'' a semicircular composition of five towers of gradually increasing heights. Astute historians will inevitably recognize the spiral of skyscrapers as a version of the temple to Marduk, the Babylonian ''bull calf of the sun.''
In the end Libeskind had to modify his proposal, removing the plans for a hanging gardens and changing from a seventy-story structure to the current plan for the re-named "One World Trade Center" (pictured right) to rise 104 stories, with the spire at the top reaching a height of 1,776 feet.
In the meantime Libeskind has re-worked his dream of building a "hanging gardens" into his current proposal for a "New York Tower" that will be built at One Madison Avenue near the Empire State Building (below).
Come out of her, My people...
If Isaiah 9:10 is indeed a reflection of our nation's heart today, as Jonathan Cahn has shown, then there is another text besides 2 Chronicles 7:14 that we must respond to. I believe it is a message from Jesus Himself to His Bride, the Church, begging us to unhook ourselves from the world and focus solely upon Him:
"And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double. How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her." (Revelation 18:4-8)

and ask God just exactly what this means, and then ask for the courage to
